The Secret to Wellbeing

By Dr. Margaret Paul

We all want to experience wellbeing, but you might have many false beliefs about what actually creates this state.

feeling great, spiritual connectionWhat do you believe creates your wellbeing?

You might want to take a piece of paper and write down what you believe your wellbeing is dependent upon, such as:

•    Finding the right relationship
•    Getting married
•    Your partner changing
•    Money
•    Having a child
•    Your child doing well in school
•    Your adult children doing well
•    Being a grandparent
•    Moving to a different house, a different state, or not having to move
•    Having a new car
•    Getting a new job
•    Being approved of by a particular person
•    Losing weight
•    Having plastic surgery
•    Healing from an illness

Why Do Some People Experience Wellbeing Without Any of This?

If any of these are true, how do some people manage to sometimes have a sense of wellbeing while in prison? How did Victor Frankl, author of "Man's Search for Meaning," sometimes experience wellbeing in a concentration camp? How do some homeless people sometimes experience a sense of wellbeing? How did Ken Keyes, a quadriplegic and author of "The Handbook of Higher Consciousness," experience so much wellbeing?

When you attach your wellbeing to someone or something outside yourself, then you get into trying to figure out how to control the person or situation. This creates anxiety and stress, since not only are you trying to control what you can’t control, but you are attaching your wellbeing to the outcome.

You Might Have It Backwards!

The paradox is that when you truly take responsibility for your own wellbeing through learning to love yourself, you have more control over manifesting what you want. There is nothing wrong with wanting what you want, but when you attach your wellbeing to it, you create huge problems for yourself. You are seeing things backwards - believing that getting what you want creates wellbeing, rather than understanding that wellbeing supports you in getting what you want.

What we do have control over is our thoughts, but how often do you actually experience or execute this control? Most people have an ego wounded self that chatters away, often thinking thoughts that create anxiety, depression, and stress. Even if they practice meditation, they find that they cannot control their thoughts when they are not meditating.

You cannot control your thoughts when you unconsciously attach your wellbeing to situations and people, which you then need to control. When this is the case, your intent is to control rather than being loving to yourself. This inner abandonment creates the lack of wellbeing.

The only way you can be loving to yourself is to detach your wellbeing from outside events and people. Your wellbeing needs to be in this moment, each moment - being present with your inner self and your higher Self.

The Secret to Wellbeing

The only way I know of to create true inner wellbeing is to stay connected with the love and peace of spirit - feeling that love and peace that is spirit in my heart. The feeling of wellbeing is the state of grace that enters my heart when I open my heart to learning about loving myself and others, and when I am in deep gratitude for this journey of life that we are on.

Staying connected is about staying in a deep level of gratitude - gratitude to the universe for deciding to express itself as us, so that we can be on this incredible journey of life; gratitude for the magnificence, the splendor, the beauty and grandeur of the love that is spirit, for the wise presence that is our source, and for the many blessings that are bestowed upon us.

Wellbeing is about being - the being that comes from being connected with your source. Once you experience the grace of wellbeing, then not only is it easier to manifest the things you want, but you also get to truly enjoy them!
